New Beginnings

— 2020

Abnormals was the first team I ever joined in the Minecraft community. I was approached by the team to do renders for their newest mod, Environmental. Eventually, I would also get a chance to contribute some assets to the mod such as mobs and music.

Expansion

— 2021

We love sharing sneak peeks and news about our mods all the time. However, we needed a better way to express this information. Originally we only used Twitter and Discord announcements, but we thought we could 'spice things up'. We needed a website. So, I got to work with @jaacksondev on creating a website that represented Abnormals, with blogs and an area for all of our mods in one place.

Consistency

— present

With Abnormals, I have done all of the logo work for the mods, staying consistent with each new mod. In terms of textures and models, I create when I get a chance to. The fun part about the modding workflow is that you can work on whatever you want, whenever you want.

Branching Out

— 2021

I joined Moonflower to help out with the brand design. We wanted something fresh and new, straying away from the 'vanilla+' style. I have also contributed art assets for various mods however, they aren't out yet. 👀Every icon and logo for Moonflower has been made by yours truly.

New Territory

— 2022

One thing we wanted to do for the major mods we released was to make trailers showcasing their features. I would describe my editing style as 'music-based', meaning I like to edit to the beats of a song rather than cutting when it feels right. That's probably what helps them stand out.

When

2023

The Masayoshi Games was a project in collaboration with Moonflower and MC Party for Twitch Rivals. 40+ streamers were teamed up and fought in a hunger games style event featuring a ton of custom blocks, mobs, and bosses that have never been seen before in Minecraft.

yes, the clocktower does change depending on the in-game time!

Putting On A Show

— 2022

During the months of 2022, Moonflower teamed up with MC Party in creating an event for @ItzMasayoshi, which was held by Twitch Rivals. This event was like nothing ever seen in the Minecraft event space.I created a lot of the props seen throughout the world including chairs, tables, big things, small things. We had created an in-house mod and Blockbench plugin that allowed us to break the boundaries with Java blockmodels to create bigger, better things.I also made some of the blocks and mobs seen throughout the world, most notably the capybara and cherry blossom trees. The maple forests were also really fun to make just because all of the colors in the biome complemented each other so well.

Collaboration

— 2022

I worked heavily alongside @SokoBuilds in making sure the world was detailed to its fullest potential. I think working with the level designers is very important especially when they understand what the artists fully capable of.We realized that some things just couldn't be builds; interiors were better off using custom models and ballistas were better as fully-modeled entities. We also experimented with moving models like the windmills for example. This project helped me realize that you do way better when you bounce ideas off other people and trusting others to take over certain tasks when it becomes too overwhelming. Everyone did an incredible job making sure the world felt cohesive and lively even with the limits of Minecraft.

Spreading The Word

— 2023

With the deadline closing in, there was one more thing I had to do, which was actually what I was originally brought on for. The trailer. Back in August 2022, I made a rough trailer a week before the 'original deadline.' However, as deadlines got pushed back, I realized I could do a lot better. So, a week before the actual trailer was supposed to go out, I was asked if I could make a longer trailer in a week. It was ambitious, but I persevered. I composed an orchestral version of @MistaJub's track, Sun, which was used in the teaser. Then, I went and got the shots; if only it was that simple.I spent the next four days trying to get Replay Mod to work with the server and our in-house mod. We finally fixed it by removing some features from the mod however, I only had about two days left. I spent every hour I could, recording and editing, and of course, the trailer came out amazing in the end.The announcement trailer you see today was actually the original trailer however, this was later turned into the teaser after discussing a potential second trailer.

original ableton session for the trailer music; i'm way more organized now.

We remade Squid Game in Minecraft; featuring 150+ players and a $2500 prize pool. These players competed in a series of games inspired by the show, with only one person being the winner.

From Concept To Reality

— 2021

I was talking with @jaacksondev about potentially creating a Squid Game event inside of Minecraft. However, we didn't have any connections that would help us get the number of players to pull off such an event. I sent out a tweet showing off what assets I had made so far and asked if anyone would be interested in such of an event. Luckily, at the same time Button Studios was working on a version of Squid Game and contacted us about possibly collaborating on this event. We agreed and brought some other people from Moonflower with us too.

New Workflow

— 2023

I joined Ender for a few months to help out with renders and revamp the Minecraft server's look and feel. However, this experimentation would be cut short due to shifting ambitions, but I'd still like to showcase what I got to publicly put out anyway.I'm still grateful to have been a part of this experience since it taught me a lot about company workflows since I've never done anything 'serious' in the Minecraft scene. I'm definitely better prepared for more jobs like this.
